After starting from the back of the grid, Reece Barr and his 2 Seas Motorsport teammates won the Bronze Cup class at the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup finale in Portimão, Portugal on Saturday, 17th October.
The Irishman drove the #222 Mercedes-AMG with British drivers Charles Dawson and Kiern Jewiss, who brought the car home 13th overall after three hours.
Speaking on the win, the 25-year-old told Motorsport Week that it was “An unbelievable end to our year.”
“After a mega opening stint by Charles he handed me the car in a strong position,” he sadded. “When I got in, I knew we were within striking distance of the lead, so I had one goal. I drove what I’d say was one of the most intense stints of my career, fighting my way to the front and then defending the lead for 50 minutes straight.”
“I couldn’t be prouder of the job we all did as a team this weekend. To turn things around from last to first and finish our season on the top step is an incredible feeling. It’s never over till it’s over.”
Portimão drew unusual attention when four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen finished ninth in his series debut. Verstappen ran in a sister Mercedes to Barr, with the pair sharing a garage. Nine-time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi also started on the grid, but faced car troubles early in the race before finishing out a season in GT racing.
“Having Max in the garage with us is definitely a cool feeling, and it’s exciting to see it bring more eyes to the sport,” Barr said.
