Lorenzo Baldassarri resisted a late surge from Jorge Navarro to win a shortened Moto2 Spanish Grand Prix, while Augusto Fernandez sealed a maiden podium.

The race was stopped on the opening lap when a crash for Remy Gardner triggered a multi-rider collision at the first two corners.

Gardner highsided out of Turn 1, with Marc VDS' Alex Marquez unable to avoid the stricken SAG machine. Team Asia's Dimas Ekky Pratam also struck Gardner's bike, and slid into Tech3's Marco Bezzecchi at the second turn.

Pratama and Gardner were taken to the medical centre, while Marc VDS were able to repair Marquez's bike and to allow him take the 15-lap restart from pitlane.

Pons man Fernandez grabbed the holeshot from third on the depleted grid, with team-mate Baldassarri slotting into second, while Navarro made a sluggish getaway from pole.

Fernandez held a half a second advantage over Baldassarri at the end of the first lap, and kept that gap fairly stagnant over the next handful of laps.

Baldassarri soon upped his pace and reeled in his team-mate, eventually making a successful raid on the lead at the final corner at the end of the seventh tour.

Fernandez kept Baldassarri in check, but a small mistake under braking for the first turn gave his team-mate slight breathing space, while Navarro began to reel him in.

Navarro, who cleared Intact GP's Tom Luthi at Pedrosa corner on lap eight, was 1.2s adrift of the leading two by lap 11, and took second from Fernandez three tours later.

Now clear, Navarro set his sights on Baldassarri, who was eight tenths clear as they started the last lap, but was under half a second ahead as they headed into the third sector.

Baldassarri was able to maintain this advantage, however, and led Navarro across the line by 0.359s to claim his third win of the year and re-establish a 17-point lead in the championship.

Fernandez was a further 0.732s adrift to secure his debut podium in third, while Luthi and KTM's Brad Binder rounded out the top five.

Xavi Vierge was sixth at the flag on his Marc VDS Kalex, while team-mate Marquez got the finish in 24th.

Tetsuta Nagashima was forced to start from pitlane prior to the red flag after his SAG machine broke down. However, the restart allowed him to take up his ninth-place grid slot, which he converted to seventh in the race.

Luca Marini got the best of VR46 team-mate Nicolo Bulega for eighth, while Iker Lecuona [American Team] completed the top 10.

Gresini's Sam Lowes crashed out of seventh midway through the race, joining Simone Corsi [Tasca] and Nieto stand-in Mattia Pasini on the sidelines.
