Danilo Petrucci topped a red-flag interrupted MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix FP3 with a record lap, while both factory Yamaha riders missed the Q2 cut.
The cooler conditions on Saturday morning led to a flurry of fast laps early on in FP3 as the riders made their first bid for the Q2 places.
Suzuki's Alex Rins was left in 16th at the end of Friday's running, but proved the first improver on Saturday morning as he moved up to ninth on the combined times and top in the session with a 1:38.353s.
On his following tour, the Austin race winner toppled Petrucci's Friday best with a 1:37.840s to go 0.279s clear of the field in the early stages.
Valentino Rossi was just two places ahead of Rins on the Friday timesheets, after the Yamaha rider struggled for pace in the hotter temperatures experienced in FP2.
The Yamaha rider made good use of the fresher conditions in FP3 to lift himself out of the Q1 zone with a 1:38.072s to go sixth on the combined times.
Six minutes after Rins shot to the top of the times, Marc Marquez guided his Honda to the head of the pack with a 1:37.712s, setting that time on the hard rear tyre while Rins was on the soft.
A crash for Honda stablemate Cal Crutchlow on the LCR bike at Peluqui 10 minutes later led to the red flag being shown to allow the air fence to be repaired.
At the restart, Jorge Lorenzo deposed Honda team-mate Marquez with a 1:37.684s, but was soon beaten by Petronas SRT runner Fabio Quartararo by 0.001s.
Takaaki Nakagami, on the year-old LCR Honda, upped the pace further to a new lap record of 1:37.587s, but was instantly demoted by Ducati's Petrucci by 0.040s.
Quartararo seized top spot on his follow-up tour with a 1:37.485s, which stood as the benchmark for eight minutes before Yamaha stablemate Rossi set the pace with a 1:37.417s.
Marquez re-secured first place with a 1:37.018s, but was denied top honours in FP3, as Petrucci returned to the top of the pile with a 1:36.957s to lead a session where the top 16 were covered by just 0.932s.
Quartararo was dumped to the cusp of Q1 during the frantic closing stages, but recovered to third ahead of Andrea Dovizioso [Ducati] and the Suzuki duo of Joan Mir and Alex Rins.
Nakagami was shuffled back to seventh in the closing stages, while Crutchlow brushed off his earlier tumble to secure a Q2 spot in eighth ahead of Franco Morbidelli [SRT] and Lorenzo.
In the space of three minutes, Rossi went from leading the way to missing the Q2 cut by 0.041s in 11th, with team-mate Maverick Vinales set to join him in Q1 after only conjuring a lap good enough for 15th.
