After causing red flags in the Azerbaijan Formula 2 qualifying session, both Victor Martins and Roman Stanek were penalised and dropped down the order.
Martins was running fourth when he hit the wall in Turn 3, bringing out a red flag.
As the sole cause of the session pausing, Martins has his fastest qualifying time deleted. In line with Article 33.5 of the FIA Formula 2 Sporting Regulations.
After the session, stewards spoke to the Frenchman and his team and deemed that Martin’s clipping of the wall was due to his own mistake, not any external factors. Therefore, the FIA removed his fastest time.
Martins fell from fourth to 13th in the classification for both the Sprint and Feature Race.
Roman Stanek also faced punishment for bringing out a red flag in the closing stages of the session.
Stanek ran wide in Turn 1 and came to rejoin the track, where he then collided with Van Amersfoort’s John Bennett, taking both drivers out of the session and bringing out a red flag.
In a hearing with the Stewards after the session, the Invicta Racing driver was found solely responsible for the collision. Re-joining the track unsafely. As a result, he had his fastest lap time deleted.
This dropped Stanek from ninth to 12th for both the F2 Sprint and Feature Race, missing out on his opportunity to start on the front row for the Sprint.
However, Stanek was given an additional penalty for his unsafe rejoin. He received a five-place grid penalty for both races. Ultimately dropping him to 17th.
