Team Penske has parted ways with veteran IndyCar driver Will Power, the team announced on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old first raced with Team Penske in 2009, and had been with the same team ever since.

17 seasons, two championships, one Indianapolis 500 win, and 42 overall victories describe an incredible tenure at one of IndyCar’s powerhouse teams.

That relationship has now come to an end, and Power will be on the move for next season.

“As we sat down to talk about our future together, Will felt that it was time for him to make a change beginning with next season,” said Roger Penske in the release.

“He has been an outstanding driver and teammate for our organization. His results speak for themselves, and we wish him the very best in the next phase of his career.”

Power also had a quote attributed to him in the press release, which seemed to indicate that it was his decision to leave as much as the team’s.

“It’s been the honor of my life to drive for Roger and the Penske organization,” Power said.

“We have accomplished so much together, and I will always be grateful for my time with the team and my teammates who have supported me along the way.

“After much consideration, I felt like a change for me was the right move at this time.”

Parting of ways

The writing had been on the wall for much of the season that Team Penske was looking to move on from Power.

The veteran employed Fernando Alonso’s management agency to help with negotiations, but the season continued to progress with no contract extension announced.

Power related that some of the turmoil caused by the team’s management shake-up was delaying his talks even further, and he was not able to seriously talk about his future until very late in the year.

Now, just two days after the conclusion of the 2025 season, it has been confirmed that he will no longer be employed with the historic squad.

Even though Power finished ninth in the championship standings, he was the best performing driver of Team Penske in what was its worst season in decades.

Power’s final win with Team Penske came early in August with a standout performance at Portland International Raceway.

He finished 21st in his final race last weekend at Nashville Superspeedway, but was leading for a time and was brought down the order by a mistake on a pit stop near the midpoint of the event.

Power has not yet announced what his next plans are, and it is unclear if he will even stay in IndyCar or go another path.

Team Penske also did not announce who would fill the seat of the #12 entry.
