Update: The second IndyCar practice session has been cancelled outright. Next session is qualifying at 11:30 AM PT.
The NTT IndyCar Series was set to hit the track early Saturday morning for a second practice session at Laguna Seca, but that was delayed by conditions.
A marine layer of low clouds, becoming fog at times, has led to the series halting the planned activity.
The main issue is that the medical helicopter cannot safely fly in the soupy conditions, and a standby flight option is required for cars to take the track.
Laguna Seca is located in the hills just a few miles away from shore, and foggy conditions are common nearly every day before noon as the sea breeze brings in heaps of moisture.
The track itself is also very wet, with light mist building up all morning to coat every surface in the area.
A wet track on its own would not prevent IndyCar from taking the track, as the series brings wet weather Firestone tires to every road course event.
But safety takes priority, and drivers will have to wait until later in the day to finish preparing for Sunday’s race.
It is not known yet if second practice will be cancelled altogether or if the schedule will be adjusted to give drivers a session later in the day.
