Jakarta E-Prix: Dan Ticktum takes maiden Formula E win in dramatic finish

Dan Ticktum is finally a Formula E race winner

Dan Ticktum took his maiden win in Formula E after a dramatic finish to the Jakarta E-Prix saw him profit from a late full course yellow.

The Brit, who had been threatening to score a big result sooner than later, nabbed the win after a flurry of late drama saw likely victor Jake Dennis drop out of contention.

Mahindra’s Edoardo Mortara was second, with Nico Mueller taking third to give the Andretti team some consolation.

Antonio Felix da Costa was fourth, with Nick Cassidy fifth and Taylor Barnard sixth.

The second NEOM McLaren of Sam Bird was seventh, with the two Envisions of Sebastien Buemi and Robin Frijns eighth and ninth.

Oliver Rowland made up for a poor qualifying result to take the final point, despite a five-second time penalty.

At the start, Dennis held the lead, with de Vries taking second off Barnard, as Ticktum leapfrogged Cassidy for fourth.

The first lap went without incident, as Dennis held the lead, with Vergne being the first. to take Attack Mode at the end of Lap 3.

However, it proved to be a disaster for the Frenchman, having dropped behind Mitch Evans, and in an attempt to overtake him, the DS Penske clouted into the back of Jaguar, damaging his front wing and sending him into the pits.

As the lead Andretti stayed in the lead, the second of Nico Mueller was moving up, muscling his way past Sam Bird’s McLaren for ninth place.

It got even worse for DS, as Max Guenther came into the pits to retire on Lap 7, having slid into the wall on the dusty circuit as he battled with Rowland.

The Nissan driver was now up to 12th, and made contact with Evans as he tried to take 11th, the Brit complaining that the Kiwi had turned in on him.

He made the move stick on Lap 11, as Buemi moved ahead of Mortara for sixth, with Cassidy still holding firm in fifth.

Pascal Wehrlein, having started a lowly 17th, took his first Attack Mode, as Rowland was handed a five-second time penalty for causing the collision that helped take Guenther out of the race.

As Wehrlein tried to make his way up the field, a flurry of action ensued around him, as he, Zane Maloney and Sam Bird – who missed the loops when trying to take Attack Mode – all jostled for position.

Attack Modes came in thick and fast now, with Mortara, da Costa, Ticktum, Buemi and Mueller all going for their first.

The Swiss’ Mahindra was looking to get past Cassidy, the Kiwi yet to take any extra power.

Barnard almost lost it on the dusty surface when taking his Attack Mode, narrowly missing the wall as he got back on the racing line.

Dennis and de Vries finally to their first, as Mortara now went into the lead as his extra power ended, the Andretti coming out second and in-between the Mahindras.

De Vries and Dennis collide

As the start of Lap 21, Dennis went back into the lead, as Barnard tried desperately to work his way back up the order, but sliding wide on the dust again as he tried to take Mueller’s eighth spot.

De Vries went for the lead as his Attack Mode began to ran out, but Dennis cut across into Turn 1 to keep the lead.

The Dutchman would try again at the same point, and as he overtook Dennis tried to cut him off, but appeared to misjudge the situation and moved over too early, cutting across the Brit’s front wing.

Debris immediately sprayed onto the circuit but both men kept first and second. The chunks of carbon fibre now going into the Turn 1 braking zone left the race director no option but to deploy the Safety Car.

It lasted just one lap, with race control taking a good look at the incident, as de Vries continued in the lead.

Wehrlein tried to divebomb Rowland on Lap 27, and again the dust made the task harder, the Porsche sliding and nearly losing it, and as a result fell behind Barnard into 11th.

De Vries was handed a 10-second penalty for the move on Dennis, effectively ending his chances of victory.

Dennis took his second Attack Mode, falling to fourth on the road behind Ticktum, cleverly keeping it conservative on the dust and maintaining decent track position.

Mortara, now Dennis’ biggest challenger, took his second attack, but the threat of a Safety Car loomed again, as Jake Hughes’ Maserati stopped at Turn 1 due to a technical issue, issuing a full course yellow.

The green flag quickly came out again though and da Costa, needing to take his second Attack Mode quickly, got it in just in time with the laps now ticking away quickly.

Stoffel Vandoorne in the second Maserati went nose-first into the wall at the end of the lap, the car seemingly failing to brake. De Vries then crawled to a halt, as Dennis inexplicably dropped back towards the foot of the pack.

This left Ticktum now in the lead, with Mortara in second, but the quick burst of retirements caused a second full course yellow.

At the start of Lap 34, racing resumed, in what now appeared to be a straight fight for victory between Ticktum and Mortara, who quickly both left Buemi behind in third, but he too had a time penalty, leaving fourth-placed Mueller in the position effectively.

Going into the penultimate lap, and Ticktum was still holding off Mortara, the pair’s remaining energy percentage almost the same.

It would take a mistake from Ticktum to thwart his victory, and Mortara was nowhere close enough to the Cupra Kiro, and on his 60th Formula E start, Dan Ticktum took his first victory in the all-electric championship.
