Envision Virgin Racing's Robin Frijns topped the timesheets in opening practice for this weekend's Marrakesh E-Prix, leading the way after 45 minutes of running.

Frijns, who narrowly missed out on a points finish at the season-opening Ad Diriyah E-Prix after finishing in 12th, set a best time of a 1m 17.808s, heading current championship leader Antonio Felix da Costa by 0.094s.

Sam Bird followed da Costa in third fastest in the second Audi-powered Envision Virgin Racing car, only 0.110s adrift of his team-mate's session-topping pace while fellow countryman Oliver Rowland was fourth for Nissan e.dams. Oliver Turvey completed the top five for NIO.

Mitch Evans emerged as the lead Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver, fronting a 6-7 finish in FP1 for the British marque with team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr trailing the Kiwi by only 0.121s.

Alexander Sims, who continues to get acquainted with Formula E as one of the series' six rookies, was eighth fastest in the second BMW i Andretti Motorsport car, 0.696s off the pace while Sebastien Buemi followed in ninth.

Reigning Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne completed the top 10 as the lead DS Techeetah car, 0.825s adrift of Frijns' time.

Former McLaren Formula 1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne, who briefly held the fastest time in the session, was 11th for HWA Racelab and was followed by Gary Paffett, Edoardo Mortara, Jose Maria Lopez and Daniel Abt who completed the top 15 as the highest placed Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler driver, 1.391s slower than the customer Audi e-tron FE05 of Frijns.

Felipe Massa was 16th fastest in the second Venturi while Jerome d'Ambrosio was the lead Mahindra Racing driver in 17th, with team-mate and Formula E debutant Pascal Wehrlein experiencing technical problems in his M5Electro which left him with the slowest time of the session in 22nd.

Tom Dillmann was 18th and was followed by Andre Lotterer, Lucas di Grassi and Maximilian Gunther who was 21st for GEOX Dragon.
