British racer Billy Monger has successfully passed the required extraction test ahead of a potential test for the new FIA-backed Formula 3 series.
FIA Formula 3 has now taken the place of the previous GP3 championship on the Formula 1 support bill to help bring young drivers onto the world stage.
Monger is now looking to join the F1 support package in the Formula 3 series and was seen at the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as he seeks potential sponsors to help him get on the 30-car grid for the 2019 season.
After a horrendous accident at Donington Park while racing in the British Formula 4 championship in 2017, Monger, unfortunately, lost both of his legs below the knee.
The 19-year old racer shared a video of himself on social media extricating himself from the new Formula 3 chassis which will feature the halo head protection device for the first time.
Drivers are required to get themselves out of a car with seven seconds of an incident in the event of a crash.
Monger initially was refused a licence to return to racing after the FIA felt he may not be able to handle a single-seater with his limitations but has since convinced them he was able to drive again with some modifications in place.
He competed in the BRDC British Formula 3 championship throughout the 2018 season for Carlin, securing four podium finishes including a pole position at a rain-soaked Donington Park circuit just a year and a half after his horrific crash. He finished sixth in the driver's championship.
