Nikita Mazepin claimed victory in the final GP3 event in a thrilling race at the Yas Marina Circuit which saw numerous clashes and close racing throughout.

The Russian driver had started from fourth but made a solid start and quickly challenged Giuliano Alesi and Juan Manuel Correa for the race lead.

Correa and Alesi were handed subsequent five-second penalties for failing to respect the virtual safety car speed, which was implemented after a clash on the run to Turn 8 involving Trident's David Beckmann, feature race winner Leonardo Pulcini and 2018 GP3 champion Anthoine Hubert.

Mazepin passed Correa on the final lap of the race to take the lead on the track and cross the line as the race winner.

ART team-mate Jake Hughes kept his nose clean throughout the race which saw him take the second step on the podium once Correa's penalty was applied at the end of the race.

Simo Laaksonen was a long way behind the leading group of cars at half distance, but with the leaders consistently running at a slower pace, the Finnish driver managed to catch and pass a handful of drivers to secure the final step on the podium for Campos.

Callum Ilott in the third ART eventually had to settle for fourth place at the line unable to get past his nearest rivals.

Trident's Ryan Tveter quickly made his way up through the order after starting outside the top 10 and finishes as the lead American driver after Correa in sixth place due to his five-second penalty.

Richard Verschoor also had a solid race despite spinning around Pedro Piquet at Turn 11 on the opening lap, stewards took no further action on the incident allowing the MP Motorsport driver to finish in seventh.

Jenzer's Tatiana Calderon had a great opening lap after starting in 10th place, she managed to avoid debris and other cars on the opening lap and was quickly up to seventh.

After getting mugged on the restart by Verschoor and Tveter she was unable to come back at them. The Colombian driver finished in eighth to claim the final point.

Australia's Joey Mawson came from last to ninth place in a solid drive for Arden with Alesi rounding out the top 10 after his penalty was applied despite finishing fifth on the road.

The GP3 series is now defunct with the new International Formula 3 taking its place on the Formula 1 support bill going forward from the 2019 season.
