Valtteri Bottas pipped his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to the top spot during second practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The pair were split by just 0.003s as they jumped up the order following Friday's opening session at Interlagos, with Bottas setting a 1:08.846 on the softest compound available this weekend, the red Supersoft tyre.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was third fastest, a mere 0.073 adrift of the Mercedes duo with the two Red Bulls completing the top five.

Daniel Ricciardo led Max Verstappen. with just over a tenth between the two, although Verstappen missed the opening 45 minutes of the session due to a cracked oil tower, which forced his mechanics into swift action to replace it.

Kimi Raikkonen was sixth ahead of Haas' Romain Grosjean. The Frenchman was 'best of the rest' and nine-tenths off Bottas' time. He and Renault's Carlos Sainz, 14th quickest, almost tangled at Turn 1 as the Spaniard drafted the Haas to pass on the inside, but Grosjean refused to back down before the two got too close for comfort and Grosjean bailed out.

Charles Leclerc, Kevin Magnussen – who lost a mirror at the end of the session – and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10.

The session started with a bang as Nico Hulkenberg clattered the wall exiting Juncao, forcing a red flag as his heavily damaged Renault was recovered.
