MotoGP veteran Bradley Smith is to move into the new-for-2019 MotoE support category.

Smith, 27, has competed in MotoGP since 2013 and scored two podium finishes with Tech 3 Yamaha before switching to KTM for 2017.

But he will be replaced by Johann Zarco for 2019 and recently confirmed that he will take up a test rider role at Aprilia, having been unable to find a seat elsewhere.

On Monday it was confirmed that Smith will combine his Aprilia test role with a race seat in the MotoE category for SIC Racing Team, which will compete under the One Energy Racing banner.

“This is a completely new chapter in the motorcycling world and I am very excited to be a part of MotoE,” he said.

“I have a big task at hand to learn and adapt to this new technology, but I am confident we are ready for the challenge.”

The all-electric MotoE championship will launch next year and act as a support category to MotoGP at five European rounds: Spain, France, Germany, Austria and San Marino.

Smith is the second current MotoGP rider to secure a MotoE seat, with Xavier Simeon to remain with Avintia as it moves into the series.

Elsewhere Maria Herrera will compete for Angel Nieto, alongside Nico Terol, while occasional MotoGP starters Alex de Angelis and Randy de Puniet will compete for Pramac and Tech 3 respectively.
