Jaguar TCS Racing Team Principal James Barclay is to leave the Formula E team at the end of the season, as well as his role as Managing Director of JLR Motorsport.

Barclay was appointed Team Director of Jaguar when it entered Formula E in 2015, and in 2021, was appointed to the roles he currently holds.

During his tenure, he has overseen the big cat’s transformation from nascent rookies to World Champions, having taken the Teams’ Championship last season.

A statement released by Jaguar said: “JLR can confirm that James Barclay has decided to leave his role as Managing Director JLR Motorsport and Team Principal of Jaguar TCS Racing, effective from 01 August 2025, to pursue an exciting role outside our business.

“James has been an integral member of the JLR leadership team since he joined the company in 2013. Among many significant accomplishments during his time at JLR, last year, James sensationally led Jaguar TCS Racing to Jaguar’s first world championship win since 1991.

“More recently, James has been instrumental in establishing the programme which will see Defender enter as a factory team into the Dakar Rally and FIA World Rally Raid Championship from 2026.

“James will continue is his current role leading the JLR Motorsport function until 01 August.”

Barclay exit another big blow for Jaguar

Barclay’s commitment and drive was a key factor in Jaguar’s rise from the foot to the front of the grid.

However, the team has suffered a string of high-profile issues over the last year.

In February 2024, former technical guru Phil Charles quit to join DS Penske, which was followed by the catastrophic end to its Drivers’ Championship hopes in London.

Despite claiming the Teams’ crown for the first time, Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy both lost-out on the title to Pascal Wehrlein, with many wondering if the tactical game played by the team on the day was detrimental to both men.

Season 11 has been nigh-on a disaster for the team so far, despite Evans taking a fantastic win at the opening round in São Paulo.

Since then, only 10 points have been scored, and the team languishes in eighth in the Teams’ Championship, with Cassidy telling Motorsport Week last Thursday that he believes it is “locked-in” to performance problems until the start of the GEN4 era, which kicks-off in just over 18 months’ time.

It remains to be seen who will take Barclay’s position, but the task for whomever it will be is a big one, and although would have been one of the most coveted in FE just a short while ago, now seems like one of the most unenviable.
