Robert Wickens has confirmed he is currently a paraplegic two months after his horrific crash at Pocono Raceway during the ABC Supply 500.

In his latest social media update, the Canadian showed himself learning how to move from his bed into his wheelchair at the rehabilitation centre at the Indianapolis Methodist Hosptial.

The crash which involved Andretti Autosport's Ryan Hunter-Reay launched Wickens into the catch fencing at Turn 2, since then Wickens has had multiple surgeries to insert titanium rods and screws to help his spine heal as well as other surgeries to help heal his fractured arms and legs.

Wickens noted in his Instagram post there had been a lot of confusion with the status of his condition and wanted to let everyone know the reality of his current situation.

Recently his partner Karli Woods posted an update of the Schmidt Peterson driver successfully showing muscle movement in both legs, indicating his condition has the possibility of improving.

"Did my first slide transfer as a paraplegic today," said Wickens.

"My upper body is getting stronger and stronger and hopefully I’ll be able to do it unassisted soon. I’ve only been posting videos of the small movement in my legs, but the reality is I am far away from walking on my own.

"Some people are a bit confused with the severity of my injury, so I wanted to let you know the reality of it. I’ve never worked harder for anything in my life, and I am giving it all I’ve got to spark those nerves in my legs."
