Renault and McLaren break curfew after customs delay

The Renault and McLaren teams have both broken Formula 1's curfew on Friday morning after a customs delay left them without their oil and lubricants supply.

The FIA has however granted both teams special dispensation as the issue was out of their control, meaning the curfew infringements won't be added to their allowed total of two. It would have been Renault's first and McLaren's second curfew break.

The delay was caused by a customs backlog at Tokyo airport, which is having to deal with extra freight shipments diverted from Osaka airport, which has been closed on a regular basis in recent weeks due to storms across the Honshu island.

Teams usually conduct pre-race weekend checks on Thursday, which includes firing up their engines. However neither team could complete these checks without their supply of oil.

F1 chased up the delivery, which finally arrived on Thursday night meaning both crews headed into the circuit in the early hours of Friday morning to complete those pre-practice checks, allowing for all four cars to take part in opening practice.

Renault and McLaren use BP/Castrol oil and lubricants, whilst Renault's other engine customer Red Bull uses Exxon/Mobil and was therefore not impacted.
