Red Bull simulator driver Jake Dennis has been handed another Formula 1 test opportunity at the upcoming session in Hungary.
Dennis carries out simulator duties for the operation and received his first F1 test run in the RB14 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in May.
As per regulations, teams must hand two of the four in-season test days to drivers with fewer than two Grand Prix starts.
Red Bull had hoped to field F3 title contender Dan Ticktum – part of its young driver scheme – but he has not yet gathered the required Super License points to participate in testing.
Ticktum only has two points gathered from MSA Formula in 2015, prior to his ban from racing, though would be in line for 30 if he wins this year’s F3 championship.
Dennis, meanwhile, currently competes for R-Motorsport – an affiliate of the Arden operation owned by the Horner family – in Blancpain, having previously raced in F3 and GP3.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner confirmed to Sky Sports that Dennis’ run is planned to further help correlation between its simulator and on-track data, but expressed irritation at the situation with Ticktum.
“It’s a little bit frustrating as there’s drivers with lesser achievements,” he said.
“Dan won the Macau Grand Prix but that doesn’t register, it’s a big race in Formula 3, but doesn’t quality for any [Super License] points, a few things need to be looked at.”
Formula 1 testing in Hungary will take place on July 31 and August 1.
