Fernando Alonso felt FIA was ‘too soft’ on Kevin Magnussen in British GP

McLaren's Fernando Alonso felt the FIA was 'too soft' on how they dealt with Kevin Magnussen during their battle towards the latter stages of the British Grand Prix.

Towards the end of the race, the pair clashed at Luffield as Alonso tried to make a pass around the outside of the Dane, but felt he was pushed off the circuit and into the gravel on the outside of the track.

The double world champion was unimpressed by the how the stewards failed to act upon the clash between the two drivers despite eventually passing Magnussen on the final lap of the race.

The Spaniard had already encountered problems with the Haas driver in the first practice session, it appeared Magnussen was weaving in an erratic manner towards Alonso after a misunderstanding about how the pair would go into Turn 1 towards the end of the session. The stewards took no further action on that incident.

"The incident was at Turn 7, I went around the outside and when I came back to the normal line I was pushed off, in the gravel," said Alonso.

"We've been told you have to leave room for the other car but some don’t and nothing happens. And then, as we were stuck behind a big group there was no possibility to attack those at the front of that group. I think we lost at least one place, but at the end, we finished ahead of Magnussen anyway."

"He fought hard like he always does, and the FIA was a little soft, in my opinion. It was fine as in the last lap I could re-overtake him, so in the end, there was maybe not a big difference in terms of position, so I’m happy for that, happy with the position, and with getting more points for the team.

"In 99 per cent of those cases they penalise or make the driver give the position back, but they didn’t follow that road, so we have to respect that and overtake him on the track. And that’s what we did.

Alonso ended the race in eighth place scoring four more points to help McLaren in the Constructors' Championship albeit dropping to seventh, just one point behind Force India.
