F2 implements clutch fixes, standing starts set to return

FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting has confirmed that Formula 2 will return to undertaking standing starts in Hungary, after fixes were put in place.

Formula 2 has been beset by clutch and engine issues with the new-for-2018 F2/18 machine and in Austria opted to undertake rolling starts in a bid to alleviate the clutch problem.

That scenario was replicated in Britain, due to the limited time in which to implement repairs, but series officials expressed optimism that a fix would be in place for Hungary.

Whiting confirmed that all of the F2/18 machines will have new clutches prior to the next event, and teams will be permitted 100km of private testing at a venue of their choice, for the sole purpose of practicing starts.

Teams will also be afforded an extra set of tyres with which to carry out the procedure.

“There are additional people working on the control software and they’ve found one particular thing which was most likely the principle cause of the stall,” said Whiting.

“It seems that the engine wasn’t generating enough torque at the point that the driver wanted to drop the clutch and hence it was stalling.”

All engines will also be sent back to supplier Mecachrome for the components to be run on the dyno for mid-season checks, and a ballot system will be put in place to determine who receives which engine upon their return.
