Jack Hawksworth sets new GTD lap record at Watkins Glen to take pole

With the third record-breaking lap of the session, 3GT Racing’s Jack Hawksworth posts the fastest GTD lap at Watkins Glen International to take the pole for Sunday’s race.

Hawksworth’s 1:44.499 lap surpassed the record setting lap of Christopher Mies, who had previously surpassed the record setting lap of Kyle Marcelli. The session solidified a strong pace by the 3GT Racing Lexus team across the weekend, topping the first and final sessions.

“We looked fast all weekend,” Hawksworth told IMSA Radio. “It sounds stupid, but I’ve been struggling with the feeling in the car this weekend.”

“We didn’t know what to expect, but the guys did a very good job.”

Mies maintained P2 and Marcelli P3, as Mies spoiled the Lexus hopes of sweeping the front row. Alvaro Parente and Lawson Aschenbach rounded out the top five in the Meyer Shank Racing Acuras.

The points-leading Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini of Madison Snow ran its fastest pace of the weekend, qualifying P7. The team struggled throughout the weekend in practice with poor handling, but the team was far happier with Saturday’s pace after some overnight adjustment.

With Watkins Glen International’s many run off areas and wide open pace, Hawksworth hopes that starting on pole will keep his #15 Lexus clean and out front throughout Sunday’s race.

“These races this year have been very green,” he said. “I don’t expect to see a lot of yellow. If that’s the case, starting up front will be a big advantage.”

Jack Hawksworth will lead the GTD class to green in Sunday’s Sahlens Six Hours of the Glen with his second pole of the season. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship takes to the track Sunday, at 9:30 a.m. ET.
