The day has almost arrived. Tomorrow will see the World Motor Sport Council versus Ferrari over team orders allegedly used during the closing stages of the German GP.
The outcome is anybodies guess, but possible sanctions include further fines, the docking of driver or team points, expulsion from the championship or a mere slap on the wrist.
McLaren driver Jenson Button, believes the likely outcome will see the team punished rather than the drivers, therefore docking the team points in the constructors championship or fining them further.
“I don’t think the drivers will get a penalty,” said the Brit. “If they do get another penalty it will be for the team because it was an order from the team.”
This does seem the most plausible result as it became apparent that the drivers themselves won’t be in attendance at the meeting, although they will be available via video link if need be.
Another key figure not attending the hearing in his usual role will be the FIA president, Jean Todt. Graham Stoker, a London barrister, will reside over the case thanks to Todt’s previous role as team principal of the Ferrari team.
An announcement is expected in the afternoon on Wednesday as to what the punishment will be. Further details on 2011 regulations and the 13th team are also expected to accompany the announcement.
Whatever the result, Ferrari have threatened to sue the FIA if their championship fight is damaged in the outcome. This fight will be far from over come Wednesday night.
