Ferrari reserve Antonio Giovinazzi to make Le Mans debut

Ferrari test and reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi will make his debut at the Le Mans 24 Hours this year.

Giovinazzi finished runner-up to Pierre Gasly in the 2016 GP2 standings and joined Ferrari as back-up to Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.

The Italian participated in two Grands Prix with Sauber, as a replacement for the unfit Pascal Wehrlein, and also made practice outings for Haas, as he staked his claim for a 2018 race seat.

However, Haas retained Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen while Sauber kept hold of Marcus Ericsson as team-mate to runaway F2 champion Charles Leclerc, leaving Giovinazzi on the sidelines.

Giovinazzi has retained his Formula 1 role with Ferrari – and will make six FP1 outings for Sauber this year – and will return to racing at Le Mans this June.

Giovinazzi will compete in a Ferrari 488 GTE run by AF Corse in the GTE Pro class alongside Toni Vilander and Pipo Derani, in a third car – the No. 52 – added only for Le Mans.

Giovinazzi has previous experience in the World Endurance Championship, having started two races for Extreme Speed Motorsports in 2016, coming second in the LMP2 class at the 6 Hours of Shanghai.
