Briatore believes Webber will take 2010 title

Flavio Briatore, the ex-Renault team principal ousted from Formula One over his involvement in ‘crash-gate’, believes Mark Webber will take the title in 2010.

The comments came after the Australian, who is managed by Briatore, secured his fourth victory of the season and moved to the top of the championship table by four points ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

“Watch out, Webber is on his way to win the title – what he did in Hungary on Sunday was phenomenal,” the Italian told Gazzetta dello Sport. “But I’m not tipping Webber just because he is one of my drivers, I only state what everyone has seen from home.”

Briatore reckons Webber’s maturity and calmness helped him to realise his strategy last weekend, where by he ran three quarters of the race on the soft tyres giving him a big enough gap to pit and stay P1 despite a safety car.

“Mark is a driver capable of exceptional feats. He has now reached a maturity and inner calmness that can take him really far.

“In Hungary he was the first one understanding that he could take a risk in running for three-quarter distance on the soft tyres he had at the start. That was the winning move, but it also demonstrated how much he uses his brain, unlike many others.”
