Formula E unveils radical Gen2 car for Season 5

Formula E has unveiled a radical-looking new car for Season Five (2018/19) of the championship, which will replace the Spark-Renault SRT 01E currently in use.

The second-generation chassis, which has been designed by the FIA, includes the Halo head protection device, but includes an LED light system to provide additional information to spectators and fans watching on television.

Designed to be used for the next three seasons, the car has almost double the energy storage capacity and double the range of the current car, allowing drivers to complete a full race at higher speeds, without making a mid-race car swap.

"This car represents the future of racing," commented Formula E Founder and CEO Alejandro Agag. "When we started Formula E, our goal was to break the mould and challenge the status quo – bringing a revolution to motorsport. This next generation car represents that revolution."

A physical car will be unveiled on March 6 at the Geneva motor show.

FIA president Jean Todt added: “These are very exciting times for Formula E. Today we show for the first time the design of the next generation car, and I’m sure that everyone will be very excited by how futuristic and advanced it is.

"I’m very proud that the FIA has been at the forefront of this car’s development, it’s something new for the Federation, and the project has been a huge success. I can’t wait to take the covers off the real car when it will be seen for the first time in Geneva on March 6."
