Rebellion Racing to make LMP1 return in 2018

Rebellion Racing will return to the LMP1 fold next season with a two-car entry.

The Anglo-Swiss squad stepped back from the top category at the end of 2016, before winning the World Endurance Championship LMP2 title this year.

It will run a star-studded driver lineup that includes two former Porsche LMP1 stars and Le Mans winners in Andre Lotterer and Neel Jani.

Lotterer is set to make his debut with Rebellion having represented Porsche and Audi in previous seasons, while Jani returns to the outfit that gave him his first 24 Hours of Le Mans start in 2009.

“I am looking forward to coming back where my endurance career started 9 years ago," said Jani, who left Rebellion to join Porsche's LMP1 team in 2014."

"With the new regulations, I hope we can reach the overall podium at Le Mans and with a bit of luck, maybe we can even grab some wins during the super season of [the] WEC.”

Bruno Senna, who was part of the team's 2017-winning crew, will also feature, as will long-time Rebellion driver Mathias Beche.

The roster is completed by 2016 LMP2 champion Gustavo Menezes and 19-year-old Frenchman Thomas Laurent, who helped Jackie Chan DC Racing achieve victory in class at this year's Le Mans.

Menezes drove a Rebellion-entered ORECA-Gibson at the 10-hour Petit Le Mans IMSA enduro in October, in a lineup that also featured WEC regular Beche.

Both Menezes and Laurent have been stand-outs in recent WEC LMP2 seasons, with each being selected to sample LMP1 machinery at the annual end of season rookie test.

"I look forward to meeting the whole team and other drivers, seeing the car and getting in it for the first time," said Laurent.

"Driving in a LMP1 category championship is a dream come true. I think the team will do everything they can to play at the forefront, so we have to live up to expectations."

Rebellion has been widely rumoured to be gathering a programme with long-time partner ORECA, although no details of its 2018 car and engine package have been released.

It will reveal both cars for its WEC 'super season' campaign at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
