Tsunoda ‘very jealous’ of Tokyo’s Formula E debut

RB’s Yuki Tsunoda has spoken of his envy of Tokyo playing host to Japan’s first-ever FIA Formula E race.

Tsunoda, who visited the Tokyo E-Prix ahead of this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, spoke to TNT Sports on the grid, saying that he was “very jealous” that the city was hosting a motor race on its street for the first time, adding: “they are doing it literally in the middle of Tokyo.

“Access is amazing – lots of new fans that might not have interest in motorsport, they can come easily. Suzuka is a little far away from Tokyo, so slightly harder.”

“I did a couple of laps in the simulator, and there’s kind-of crests, and I saw a couple of videos of Formula E cars just jumping around there.”

Prior to the race, Tsunoda spoke to Formula E’s social media channels and said that the simulator was the first time experiencing an FE car in any way and said he “didn’t expect the amount of acceleration,” adding that: “the power they have is quite massive.”

It is one of very few occasions in which a current FIA Formula 1 driver – without affiliation to Formula E – has been present at an E-Prix, and Tsunoda’s positive comments about the sport will surely leave FE fans, drivers, teams and official personnel feeling very pleased.
