Kimi Räikkönen believes he and Ferrari are “getting to where we want to be”, following the news that the Finn will remain with the squad into 2018.

Ferrari confirmed earlier this week that Räikkönen, 37, will continue to compete for the outfit next year, for what will be his 16th campaign in Formula 1.

On his new deal, Räikkönen said: “I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t want to and be happy with it and the team feels same way.

“Everybody has their own view of things, obviously we want to do well, we want to improve.

“We always find things to do better and try to… find more speed.

“Lately it’s been a bit better; I’ve been feeling a bit more comfortable [and] able to drive as we want.

“The results look a bit better and I’m confident that we are doing the right things and getting to where we want to be.”

Räikkönen added that he would like current team-mate Sebastian Vettel to remain with the team next year.

Vettel is in the final campaign of a three-year deal, having moved across from Red Bull in 2015.

“Sebastian is the best team-mate,” said Räikkönen.

“We get on very well together, so hopefully it all stays the same as it is now.”
