Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and former grand prix star Juan Pablo Montoya will race for Team Penske in next year's IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship.

Montoya, 41, will partner 2016 series champion Dane Cameron behind the wheel of an Acura DPi run by the famed American outfit.

It will mark the Colombian's first appearance in sportscar competition since the 2013 Daytona 24 Hours, where he drove a Chip Ganassi Racing-entered Riley.

The seven-time Formula 1 grand prix winner has been linked to various sportscar drives in the past, such as Porsche's LMP1 program, but next year's IMSA series will mark his first full-season in prototypes.

“I have really enjoyed working with Roger and Team Penske over the last four years,” said Montoya.

“When Roger asked if I’d like to be part of starting this new sports car operation with Acura, it was an easy decision."

"I’ve always loved racing sports cars. It’s definitely a challenge and it’s going to be a lot of fun to develop a new car with Acura."

Montoya and Cameron will start testing the Acura ARX-05 next week, ahead of its race debut at the Daytona 24 Hours in January.

The car, designed by Honda Performance Development, will be officially unveiled this Friday during Monterey Car Week in California.

It will join the three other manufacturer DPi projects run by leading sportscar teams next year, including Mazda (Joest Racing), Cadillac (Action Express and Wayne Taylor Racing) and Nissan (ESM).

The 2018 prototype grid is also open to European-style LMP2 prototypes from ORECA, Ligier, Riley and Dallara.

“We worked together with our partners at Acura Motorsports and Honda Performance Development (HPD) to bring together drivers that we believe will help develop our program and compete for race wins right out of the gate while also serving as great ambassadors for their brands,” said Roger Penske.

“Having Juan and Dane join our program brings together two drivers that have extensive sports car racing experience in the prototype class and have already won at the top levels of the sport."

"This represents a great beginning to our program for 2018.”
