Ferrari dominated qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, with Sebastian Vettel taking his third pole position at the Hungaroring and beating his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Four-time F1 champion Vettel looked quick throughout qualifying and put in a strong opening attempt, setting a new unofficial track record with a 1:16.276.

He just missed out on bettering his earlier lap by 0.002s in the closing moments of Q3, but no one was able to beat his quickest time.

Raikkonen came closest, less than two tenths between the Ferrari duo, with Valtteri Bottas securing third on the grid after a slightly scruffy exit from the last corner.

Lewis Hamilton made a mistake at Turn 4 and bailed on his opening Q3 lap, leaving it late to put in his time and he only managed fourth.

Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo failed to back up their Friday pace in fifth and sixth, ahead of Nico Hulkenberg – who has a five-place grid drop for a gearbox penalty.

Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne gave McLaren its first double-Q3 appearance of the season in eighth and ninth, with Carlos Sainz Jr P10. They will move up a spot each due to Hulkenberg’s penalty.

Jolyon Palmer improved with his late flying lap in Q2 but he failed to progress, and had to settle for 11th place – just ahead of Force India’s Esteban Ocon.

Daniil Kvyat failed to jump into the top 10 with his final attempt, while Sergio Perez jumped Romain Grosjean with his last lap in Q2.

Kevin Magnussen managed an identical time to Perez in Q1, but as he set it after the Force India driver, he found himself 16th and was eliminated from qualifying.

The Haas racer’s lap was hampered by a small lock-up into Turn 13. Lance Stroll was only 17th for Williams, ahead of Sauber’s Pascal Wehrlein.

With Felipe Massa feeling unwell, Williams reserve driver Paul di Resta had a late call-up to compete in his first F1 race since the 2013 Brazilian GP.

He was 19th quickest in the session and was out in Q1, just ahead of Marcus Ericsson, who had a delayed start as Sauber completed an engine change.
