Sebastian Vettel quickest in FP3 as Ferrari surges clear of rivals

Sebastian Vettel set the quickest ever lap at the Hungaroring as Ferrari surged clear during the final practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

After he and Ferrari team-mate Kimi Räikkönen both went below Rubens Barrichello's record from 2004, the pair improved on their initial efforts, with Vettel winding up with a 1:17.017.

Vettel’s lap was some 1.4s quicker than the best managed during Friday’s pair of sessions, while Räikkönen finished 0.475s behind in second spot.

Valtteri Bottas was third fastest, 0.897s off the pace, while Lewis Hamilton struggled, suffering a handful of off-track moments, as he was shuffled down to fifth by Max Verstappen late on.

Stoffel Vandoorne made a late improvement to move up to sixth place, with McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso ninth, having stopped in the pit lane during the final moments.

Renault’s Nico Hülkenberg claimed seventh, with Friday pacesetter Daniel Ricciardo was only eighth, having stopped on-track at Turn 9 when his RB13 got stuck in fifth gear, amid a suspected hydraulics issue.

Jolyon Palmer recovered from a dismal Friday to round out the top 10, less than three-tenths behind team-mate Hülkenberg.

Toro Rosso and Force India were next up, with Carlos Sainz Jr. leading Esteban Ocon, Daniil Kvyat and Sergio Perez, in front of Haas pair Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen.

Felipe Massa’s participation during the remainder of the weekend’s action appears uncertain, after he ended his session prematurely, with footage suggesting Williams was changing the pedals of his FW40.

Massa visited hospital on Friday evening after feeling unwell, though was given the all-clear to take part in FP3.

Williams reserve driver Paul di Resta is on standby to pilot the FW40 if required.

Massa finished his shortened session in 17th spot, ahead of Lance Stroll, with Sauber again at the back, Pascal Wehrlein in front of Marcus Ericsson.
