Yamaha Tech 3's Johann Zarco stunned Assen to take his first MotoGP pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix, pipping three-time world champion Marc Marquez by just 0.065 seconds.

Zarco becomes the first Frenchman to take pole in the premier class since Olivier Jacque in 2002.

He made the most of the damp conditions whilst some big names struggled, particularly Ducati’s Jorge Lorenzo, who starts 21st.

Marquez had held the top spot as he crossed the start/finish straight before being beaten by Zarco, but will line up second ahead Pramac's Danilo Petrucci who also excelled in the tricky conditions.

A small mistake in the final sector by Yamaha's Valentino Rossi sees him head up the second row alongside Scott Redding and Jonas Folger, the former recovering well from an FP3 crash.

Aspar's Alvaro Bautista crossed the line in P7 ahead of LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow, with Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) completing the third row.

Aprilia's Sam Lowes made the most of his first ever Q2 appearance, taking a top ten start to head up the fourth row – and ahead of championship leader Maverick Viñales. Dani Pedrosa was P12.
