Prema’s Maximilian Gunther moved into the lead of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship with a dominant display during the opening race of the weekend at the Hungaroring.

Gunther arrived in Hungary two points down on joint leaders Joel Eriksson and Lando Norris, but surged 19 points clear with his third win on the bounce.

Gunther started from pole position off the line and was never troubled en route to victory as his title rivals both endured low-key races.

Norris slipped back at the start and came home in eighth place while Eriksson was 10th, having lined-up only 17th after missing out in a wet/dry qualifying session on Friday.

A three-way battle for second position on the opening lap was settled in favour of front-row starter Jake Hughes, who maintained his advantage over Jehan Daruvala, the duo joining Gunther on the podium.

Joey Mawson executed a fine move on Callum Ilott to finish fourth, ahead of Harrison Newey, Guan Yu Zhou and Norris.

Norris had been cut adrift after the field was split following a Full Course Yellow period, implemented on the opening lap when Ralf Aron and Pedro Piquet collided on the approach to the chicane.

Aron retired after the incident while Piquet was serviced for repairs to the rear of the car, and re-joined the action several laps down.

Norris overhauled Mick Schumacher for eighth, the pair making minor contact, though the Prema rookie held on to ninth, resisting Eriksson during the closing stages.
