Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has been awarded Rookie of the Year for the 2017 Indianapolis 500 after his debut at the race.

The Spaniard lined up fifth on the grid for the race, running in the lead at numerous times before being shuffled back during one of the pitstop phases in the second half.

With just over 20 laps to go, while running seventh, Alonso pulled off track after his Honda engine failed and he retired from the race.

Alonso decided to skip the Monaco Grand Prix, where he was replaced by Jenson Button, to compete in the Indy 500 as he goes for motorsport’s illustrious ‘Triple Crown’.

The Indy 500 Rookie of the Year award has been given out every year since 1952 and is voted for by members of the media.

Dale Coyne Racing’s Ed Jones was the highest places rookie at the chequered flag in third, with Alonso, Zach Veach and Jack Harvey failing to finish.

Alonso beat Jones to this year's award and was presented with it during the post-Indy 500 victory celebrations event.

Former F1 driver Takuma Sato became the first Japanese driver to win the Indy 500 when he took victory in the 101st running of the famous event on Sunday.

IndyCar has released the prize money figures from 2017’s race, with Sato earning $2,458,129 from the win.
