McLaren junior Nyck de Vries dominates F2 sprint race in Monaco

Rapax driver and McLaren junior Nyck de Vries claimed his maiden Formula 2 victory in the Monaco sprint race.

The first lap proved crucial to the race result, with de Vries getting the jump on his team-mate Johnny Cecotto Jr to lead into Turn 1.

From there, de Vries established a small lead, before continuing to pull away from Cecotto and the chasing pack.

It was a controlled display from the Dutch driver, taking his first F2 victory in dominant style on one of the toughest circuits on the calendar.

Cecotto had to fend off Gustav Malja in the closing laps but finished second, just under 10 seconds behind de Vries.

Malja finished third, ahead of Russian Time’s Luca Ghiotto and Artem Markelov, who made progress with some gusty passes at La Rascasse.

Alexander Albon lost a little bit of ground from his starting position and was sixth for ART Grand Prix, ahead of team-mate Nobuharu Matsushita.

Jordan King rounded out the points finishers in eighth, with feature race winner Oliver Rowland ninth, surviving Sergio Canamasas running into the back of him late on.

Antonio Fuoco was 10th, while Prema team-mate and title leader Charles Leclerc retired once more.

But the Monegasque driver made contact with Norman Nato in the early laps and was given a penalty, but later pulled into the pits to register another DNF.
