Charles Leclerc takes third straight F2 pole but faces investigation

Ferrari protege Charles Leclerc took a third consecutive pole position as he posted the quickest time on the streets of Monaco during a split qualifying session this afternoon.

However, Leclerc's pole is currently only provisional due to an investigaton for stalling in the pitlane and failing to wait a minute before getting going again, which could see him lose the place if the stewards deem it necessary.

Due to the short length of the circuit the session was split into two 16-minute sessions with odd numbered cars heading out first in Group A, before the track was handed over to Group B, with the even numbered cars.

The Prema driver posted a best time of 1:19.309 to narrowly beat Alexander Albon by just 0.012 seconds, with the pair topping their respective groups.

Should Leclerc keep pole, he will start ahead of Albon, with Oliver Rowland and Artem Markelov on the second row behind, with just just over three-tenths covering the top four drivers.

Nobuharu Matsushita will start from fifth place despite crashing out of the session at the end when he hit the kerbs going through the second part of the Swimming Pool and then collided with the barriers.

Norman Nato was third quickest in Group B, meaning he will line up sixth ahead of MP Motorsport driver Jordan King.

Completing the top ten is Luca Ghiotto in ninth ahead of Nicolas Latifi in tenth.

Nyck de Vries was sixth quickest overall, but fourth in his group and that combined with a three-place penalty from Spain means he starts 11th.
