Sebastien Bourdais has undergone successful surgery for multiple fractures sustained in a horrific incident during his qualifying attempt for the Indianapolis 500.
The four-time champion was on his third lap during Saturday qualifying when he speared violently into the SAFER barrier at Turn 2, obliterating the right-side of his car and even tipping him momentarily upside down.
Once his car had come to a halt the ever-efficient Holmatro Safety Team arrived on the scene and transported him to the IU Methodist Hospital by ambulance where he was diagnosed with multiple fractures to his pelvis and a fracture to his right hip.
"Surgery went well," explained INDYCAR Medical Director Dr. Geoffrey Billows.
"I've met with Sebastien this morning and he was doing even better than I expected.”
Moments before his incident Bourdais posted consecutively quick laps at over 231mph, which would’ve likely seen him end the first stage of qualifying towards the top of the order.
