Will Power has led a Penske 1-2-3 in practice for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, as preparations intensify ahead of qualifying later in the day.
Despite the threat of rain lingering over the picturesque Barber Motorsports Park, the final session got underway in dry and overcast conditions.
Chevrolet’s competitive start to the weekend continued with renewed gusto during the 45-minute session, with Power ending proceedings ahead of Penske team-mate’s Josef Newgarden and Helio Castroneves.
Mikhail Aleshin prevented the final Penske of Simon Pagenaud from creating a top four lock-out, with the Russian racer ending the session P4 ahead of the reigning champion.
Long Beach race winner James Hinchcliffe enjoyed an improved session in comparison to practice on Friday, initially running as high as P2 during the middle of the session before settling for P6 once the Penske drivers began improving.
Four-time champion Scott Dixon was seventh fastest for Chip Ganassi Racing, despite producing the initial benchmark at the start of the session.
Marco Andretti managed to remain relatively competitive throughout the final session, coming home only just behind Dixon in P8.
Graham Rahal and Max Chilton rounded out the top ten, with both drivers seeking improvements following a tough start to their respective weekends.
The session ran relatively incident-free with no red flag delays, however Ryan Hunter-Reay managed a minor spin at Turn 14 after running rather wide onto the dirt and subsequently losing control of his Andretti Autosport machine.
Further down the order rookie Zach Veach managed to lift himself off the bottom of the classification for the first time, eventually ending the session P20 ahead of Conor Daly who suffered a mechanical issue during the early stages of the session.
Although Penske look strong at the top of the order, lower temperatures in comparison to Friday and the chance of rain later in the day could potentially ruin their fun around the Barber Motorsports Park.
