Sauber Formula 1 driver Pascal Wehrlein will not take part in the Race of Champions Nations Cup on medical grounds after his dramatic crash on Saturday.
Wehrlein was racing against fellow F1 driver Felipe Massa during the individual competition at Marlins Park in Miami when his car hit the central barrier just after the finish line.
His three-wheeled Polaris Slingshot then clipped Massa’s car, flipping over and landing on its side on top of the ROC track wall.
Wehrlein and his passenger were unharmed, but as a precautionary measure on doctors’ advice the German has withdrawn from Sunday's Nations Cup event.
"I’m very sorry to withdraw from today’s ROC Nations Cup," he explained. "I’d really like to race again and I feel fine, but the doctors have advised me to rest so of course I will take their advice.
"It’s no more than mild discomfort but my real priority for the coming year is my Formula 1 season.
"So while I’m sad to be missing out on all the action, I send my best wishes to my team-mate Sebastian Vettel and the rest of the competitors here in Miami and I wish them another exciting day’s racing."
Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya emerged victorious in Saturday’s individual competition, on his debut at the ROC. He beat Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen to the win.
