Ahead of pre-season testing next week, Formula E have announced the 16-round calendar which will get underway in Mexico City in January, although Jakarta and season nine debutant Cape Town have been dropped.
The full calendar for season 10 is strikingly different from season nine, as the all-electric series will return to China but this time at the Shanghai International Circuit, which also hosts Formula 1. Despite reports of Hyderabad being at risk of the axe, the Indian city has remained on the calendar.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Cape Town, which was one of the favourites last season, mostly due to it having hosted one of the best races of the Gen3 era so far. No Jakarta double-header will take place either.
One round yet to be confirmed is Formula E’s annual trip to Rome. Whilst a double-header will be held in Italy, it’s currently unconfirmed whether this will be in the Italian capital, or potentially in Imola or Misano, according to various reports. It’s understood that the narrow streets of Rome are a concern of Formula E’s, given the more powerful and faster Gen3 cars.
Season nine’s trip to Rome saw one of the biggest crashes in the sport’s history, caused after Sam Bird hit a bump in a high-speed section of the circuit.
In identical fashion to season nine, Mexico City will host the season-opener on January 13, before the first double-header of the season takes place on January 26 & 27 in Diriyah. Hyderabad remains as the third round on February 10, followed by the return of São Paulo a month later on March 16.
Then comes the highly anticipated inaugural Tokyo E-Prix, which has been scheduled for March 30. This will be followed by a double-header in Italy on April 13 & 14. Formula E’s yearly trip to Monaco then takes place, with an earlier than usual date of April 27.
Next up is the Berlin double-header, commencing on May 11 & 12. The confirmation of the Berlin E-Prix dates means a clash with the WEC Six hours of Spa-Francorchamps will take place, meaning several drivers, including both Envision Racing drivers, could be absent.
Shanghai will also host a double-header but not in the typical fashion after the trip to the German capital, with the Chinese city to host an E-Prix across consecutive weekends. These races will take place on May 25 and June 8.
Formula E will return to Portland three weeks later, on June 29, before the ExCeL Centre in London plays host to the season finale double-header once again. However, this’ll take place on an earlier date of July 20 and 21. In total, the 16 rounds will take place across 11 cities around the world.
There is a chance that Indonesia could be added to the season 10 calendar, with an alternative venue being looked into between the authorities in Jakarta and Formula E. The usual trip to Jakarta on June 8 currently cannot happen, due to it clashing with a campaigning period for the Indonesian presidential elections.
Any further changes to the calendar are expected to be announced before the end of 2023.
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds is pleased that the all-electric series will be the only World Championship in 2024 competing in the “three biggest markets” on the planet: in China, India and the United States.
“Formula E will lead global motorsport next season as the only world championship to race in the three biggest markets of China, India and the USA,” Dodds said.
“Together with our debut on the streets of Tokyo and races in other major global markets like Brazil, Germany, Saudi Arabia and the UK, we have built a calendar that has the potential to engage billions of people in the exciting, entertaining, electric future of motorsport.”
