Rahal beats Hinchcliffe by 0.008 seconds to take Texas win

Graham Rahal crossed the line just 0.008 seconds ahead of James Hinchcliffe to win the Firestone 600 in Texas on Saturday night.

The race was originally scheduled to take place on the 12 June but after 71 laps, rain caused the rest of the Firestone 600 to be postponed to the 27 August.

Rahal spent most of the final 50 laps chasing Hinchcliffe and they had to contend with challenges from the likes of Tony Kanaan and Simon Pagenaud in the last five tours of the Texas Motor Speedway.

The close, bunched-up field was thanks to the race going green with just 10 laps to go after a caution for a crash between Jack Hawksworth and Mikhail Aleshin.

It was one of several incidents during the race, with Ed Carpenter – who spent a good chunk of time fighting at the front – and Scott Dixon also failing to make the finish due to contact with the wall.

Rahal fought off the advances of Kanaan and Pagenaud to challenge Hinchcliffe and just took the win on the line in what was the fifth closest finish in IndyCar history.

It was Rahal’s first win of the 2016 season and fourth overall. The photo finish was also the closest at the Texas Motor Speedway. Kanaan was just behind in third, with Pagenaud fourth.

Helio Castroneves recovered from earlier contact to finish fifth, the final driver on the lead lap. Charlie Kimball, Carlos Munoz, Will Power, Juan Pablo Montoya and Sebastien Bourdais completed the top 10.
