Pierre Gasly leads Prema Racing 1-2 in Hungary GP2 feature race

Pierre Gasly stormed to his second victory of the 2016 GP2 season in the Hungaroring feature race, leading home a Prema Racing 1-2 in Hungary.

The Red Bull junior lined up on pole position after dominating qualifying and quickly opened up a comfortable gap on the chasing pack.

He made his mandatory pitstop on lap 11 and emerged in the midfield pack, picking his way back up the order and making up ground as those on alternative strategies stopped.

Gasly crossed the line seconds clear of his team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi to pick up his second feature race win in a row, bouncing back from some lost results and disappointment earlier in the year.

Giovinazzi made a strong start and jumped up to second place, holding onto the position despite coming under pressure from ART Grand Prix’s Sergey Sirotkin.

The Russian lost ground at the start and dropped down to fifth at one point, before moving ahead of his team-mate Nobuharu Matsushita on the opening lap.

He made up ground through the pitstops after staying out later than others to move up to third, with Raffaele Marciello starting on the hard tyre, going long and pitting late on.

The riskier strategy paid off and he finished fourth, with Arthur Pic and Matsushita finishing fifth and sixth respectively.

Norman Nato held onto third place early on but a lack of race pace saw him fall to seventh, with Jordan King just beating Artem Markelov to eighth and reverse grid pole for the sprint race.

Arden’s Jimmy Eriksson had looked set to score points and possibly start on pole, he led late in the race before his pitstop but a problem saw him pull off on the last lap and stop his car.

Markelov finished ninth, with Mitch Evans completing the top 10 for Campos. Oliver Rowland tried a similar strategy to Eriksson and was 11th, ahead of fellow Brit Alex Lynn and Gustav Malja.

Marvin Kirchhofer, Daniel de Jong, Nicolas Latifi and Luca Ghiotto – who made a stunning save on the main straight – were next up. Sergio Canamasas and Sean Gelael were two drivers to pick up time penalties for exceeding track limits and finished well down the order.
