Nico Rosberg claimed his fifth win of the season as he drove a mistake-free race to take a lights to flag victory at the 2016 European Grand Prix, extending the points gap between him and team-mate Lewis Hamilton to 24 points.

The German managed the pace at the front to finish 16 seconds clear of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who himself went unchallenged in second.

Force India's Sergio Perez claimed a brilliant podium position in third with a late move on Kimi Raikkonen – although it wasn't essential as the Finn had a post-race time penalty of five seconds to serve after he crossed the pitlane entry line with all four wheels.

With Hamilton down in fifth, 23 seconds adrift of Raikkonen, the Ferrari man secured fourth place and ten points.

Hamilton suffered a mid-race reliability hiccup when his engine failed to deliver full power for several laps, just as he was challenging Perez for position. With his engineer unable to advice him on how to remedy the problem due to Formula 1's new radio clamp down, the Briton was forced to resolve it himself.

Williams' Valtteri Bottas was sixth ahead of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and team-mate Max Verstappen.

The second Force India and Williams of Nico Hulkenberg and Felipe Massa completed the top ten.

The race saw zero Safety Cars, despite the tight barriers promising action, which never materialised as the drivers, bar Felipe Nasr's brief contact, avoided any major mishaps.

Just four cars failed to finish; Fernando Alonso with gearbox trouble; Pascal Wehrlein with brake problems; and the two Toro Rosso cars.
