Rio Haryanto’s push for Manor F1 seat hinges on ‘critical week’

Rio Haryanto's push for a Formula 1 seat with Manor Racing in 2016 hinges on a "critical" forthcoming week according to the Indonesian government.

Haryanto has raced in GP2 since 2012, claiming three race wins and a best finish of fourth in the final drivers' standings.

The Indonesian driver has also tested an F1 car on a number of occasions for Manor and its predecessor teams, with the most recent run-out coming in Abu Dhabi at the end of 2015.

It was confirmed late last year that Manor had been offered £10 million by the Indonesian government to field Haryanto in 2016 after a letter was leaked.

Haryanto has been working to secure the funding over the winter so he can make his F1 debut in 2016, but currently remains short of the required target.

According to a spokesperson from the Youth and Sports Ministry, a decision should be made on Haryanto's F1 future in the next week.

“This week will be a critical time for Rio in entering F1,” Gatot S. Dewa told The Jakarta Post.

“We’ve done our best. We’ll all see how it ends.”

Haryanto's mother, Indah Pennywati, thanked the government for its support and said that she anticipates a decision from Manor in the near future.

"We would like to express our gratitude to the government — Pertamina and State-Owned Enterprises [Ministry] — which has been very supportive of Rio reaching F1," Indah said.

“We are looking forward to good news from Manor Racing regarding Rio’s participation in the event by next week."

Haryanto added: "I really hope for the best that my dream will come true."

Both of Manor's seats remain vacant for 2016. Alexander Rossi and Will Stevens raced for the team in 2015 and remain in contention to return, while DTM champion Pascal Wehrlein is another candidate thanks to Mercedes' new technical partnership with Manor.
