The two Ferrari 499P Hybrid Hypercars topped the session that was led for the majority by Toyota, ahead of the crucial Hyperpole session.
The session was without red flags or major incidents as the #50 Ferrari 499P Hybrid topped the timesheets courtesy of Antonio Fuoco, who set a time of 3:26.579. The #51 Ferrari 499P Hybrid finished the session just 0.434 seconds behind with driver Alessandro Pier Guidi setting a time of 3:27.013. Third and fourth were the #7 and #8 Toyota GR010 Hybrids, with drivers Kamui Kobayashi and Brendon Hartley 1.001 and 1.287 seconds off of Fuoco’s pace.
Porsche closed out the top six overall. The #38 Jota run Porsche 963 Hybrid set a time of 3:27.927 with driver Antonio Felix Da Costa and the #75 Penske Porsche 963 Hybrid lapped the Circuit de La Sarthe in a time of 3:28.135, courtesy of Felipe Nasr. Seventh overall went to Action Express Racing in the #311 Cadillac V-Series.R Hybrid. Jack Aitken set a time of 3:28.277 as the team continued preparations for their debut Le Mans race.
1st in LMP2 went to Pietro Fittipaldi in Jota’s #28 Oreca-07 Gibson. The Brazilian driver set a time of 3:34.071, just over three seconds clear of the #14 pro/am Oreca-07 Gibson entry from Nielsen Racing driven by Mathias Beche. Third overall in LMP2 went to Interpol Europol Competition’s Fabio Scherer in the #34 Oreca 07 – Gibson with a time of 3:37.315.
Runner up of the LMP2 pro/am entries was the Algarve Pro Racing #45 Orecao-07 Gibson of Colin Braun, who set a time of 3:37.376, good enough for fifth overall in LMP2. The third best time in the LMP2 pro/am subclass was 3:37.554, set by Giedo Van der Garde in the #39 Graff Racing Oreca-07 Gibson machine.
In GTE-Am, Francesco Castellacci went fastest in his #54 AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE Evo with a time of 3:53.681. Second went to GR Racing’s #86 Porsche 911 RSR – 19 with Benjamin Barker, who set a time of 3:53.839. The top three in GTE-Am was rounded out by the #60 Iron Lynx Porsche 911 RSR – 19 of Alessio PicarielloI, who set a time of 3:53.868.
Jenson Button set the fastest time in the #24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The Garage 56 entry run by Hendrick Motorsports lapped the Le Mans circuit with a time of 3:52.752 in the hands of the 2009 Formula 1 champion.
Next up at Le Mans is the all important Hyperpole session, which sees the top eight of each category from yesterday’s qualifying session battle to take pole for this weekend’s race. The all-important session begins at 8pm local time.
