NBA legend and basketball player LeBron James will wave the French tricolor to signal the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans this coming Saturday.

James, who is the all-time leading scorer in NBA history, plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. He’s a giant and a legend of world sport — a fitting person to wave the flag to start the centenary of one of, if not the, greatest races in the world.

Previous honorary starters include film stars Brad Pitt, Steve McQueen, and Alain Delon, plus sports lumimnaries such as Rafael Nadal, and politicians such as former French president Georges Pompidou.

“King James”, as he’s known, will wave the famous red, white and blue flag to signal the beginning of the 100th French endurance classic at 4pm local time on Saturday 10th June.

“The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a world-renowned event that, in the past, has welcomed some great names from various fields. LeBron James is a true sporting legend whose list of achievements and records commands respect and admiration.

“We are looking forward to introducing him to the unique Le Mans atmosphere and the excitement generated by the Centenary of the world’s greatest endurance race.”
