Fenestraz earns second career pole in Monaco

Sacha Fenestraz beat Jake Hughes in an all-rookie final duel to take pole for the Monaco ePrix.

Group A qualifying saw both the DS Penske’s of Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne have their lap times deleted for technical infringements relating to tyre pressures.

Several teams were investigated throughout qualifying due to several technical or regulatory infringements.

Both Nissan’s topped the times in the session, with Dan Ticktum in his NIO 333 and Mitch Evans in his Jaguar joining them in the duels.

Several drivers bumped the wall in Group B qualifying, thwarting their chances of progression.

Jake Dennis hit the wall in his Andretti, breaking his rear track rod and was only able to set a time good enough for fifth in the session.

Maximillian Gunther, Jake Hughes, Edoardo Mortara and Sergio Sette Camara progressed to the duels from Group B.

There were doubts whether Gunther would progress due to him potentially impeding Nick Cassidy at the end of the session. No further action against the team allowed Gunther to advance.

Drama in the quarter-finals saw Sergio Sette Camara beat Maximillian Gunther but have his lap time deleted due to not following the qualifying procedure in the pit lane.

The Brazillian would end up qualifying in eighth for the race, while Gunther would progress to the semi-finals to face Jake Hughes.

Fenestraz beat Ticktum, and Nato beat Evans to see an all-Nissan duel in the semi-finals, guaranteeing at least one of their cars a front-row start for the race.

The duel between the Nissan’s saw Fenestraz set the fastest-ever lap time in Formula E around the streets of Monaco, the second of these records he holds after his pole in Cape Town.

In the final duel, rookies Hughes and Fenestraz faced off for the pole position, with the Nissan coming through to beat the McLaren.

However, Fenestraz might not take the pole position for the race due to being investigated for a technical infraction involving power release.

The Monaco ePrix begins at 2pm local time.
