Hui: NIO 333 have improved but it’s not enough

NIO 333 Team Principal Alex Hui highlighted the steps made by the team so far in the Gen3 era, as well as the steps they still need to make.

After a difficult time of it in Gen2, NIO 333 has been one of the standout performers in terms of the jump they have made in this Gen3 era.

The Chinese manufacturer, based in Silverstone started their career in Formula E well, winning the drivers championship in the first season.

However, NIO 333 have struggled as a smaller team to fight with the larger manufacturers in the series, that is, until now.

The team has impressed on one lap pace this season, being at the sharp end of practice sessions and making the duels several times already (something they only managed once last year).

“This year is definitely a step forward in terms of team performance,” Hui said. “As you said, we have quite a strong one-lap pace, which we showed in the first two races.”

Hui highlighted how the team might not be there on outright pace to take it to their rivals, but was able to be in amongst the action to capitalise on others’ mistakes.

“As everyone knows, you need a bit of luck in Formula E. Last race we scored good points in P5, but we were heavily benefited by the incidents of the cars in front of us.

“We were not miles off, we were always there in the pack.”

While much of the development side of the Gen3 package is now frozen for teams, there is still much to be learnt about these cars, as well as bringing the tools they use away from the track into a closer accuracy window.

Hui highlighted that the team is already looking at the steps it can make with the evolved Gen3 package set for season 11, as well as the steps they can make along the way.

“We have now a much stronger understanding of where we are good and where we are not good. So we know where our deficit is.”

“The rate of development of us as a smaller team will be more limited. We are already looking at season 11, how to make a big step for the next package.”
