Kimi Raikkonen’s contract is due to expire at the end of the year, but the Finnish driver has hinted at a possible extension so long as the team are happy with him.
Many expect Raikkonen to call it quits at the end of the year following a disappointing return to Ferrari, which saw him struggle to match team-mate Fernando Alonso to finish just 12th in the championship.
Whilst he sits behind new team-mate Sebastian Vettel in the standings with less than half the German’s points tally, he’s finished fourth twice in three races despite some bad luck.
When asked if he would consider staying next season, he said: “We’ll see. Obviously the team has to decide that but you have to talk to them.
“I’m happy how things are running, obviously we want better results but we’ve been a bit unlucky or whatever you want to call it in the first three races. Hopefully we can get it like the last race which was better but obviously in qualifying I made a mistake so time will tell what will happen. It’s up to the team really to decide that.”
Meanwhile Vettel says he would like to see Raikkonen remain his team-mate next year, but ultimately admitted the decision wasn’t his to make.
“I have a very good relationship with him,” he said. “It’s still very straightforward. He’s doing a very good job. Last year it wasn’t noticed so much, but inside the team it was, and it was a lot closer than people remember between him and Fernando.
“I don’t know the details of his contract. It’s in his hands if he wants to carry on. There is plenty of interest for a fast driver like him, with the experience he has.”
