After an unexpected second-place finish at his home Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso still admits that his Ferrari isn’t in any sort of a position to win a race yet.
Alonso spent much of his time at the Circuit de Catalunya staring at the rear-wing of Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren, however on the penultimate lap, the Brit collided with the tyre barrier after a puncture to his front-left Bridgestone.
Speaking after the race, Alonso told the media, “It’s true the result came in an unexpected way, but that’s racing.”
“We knew we could expect a difficult Grand Prix, we still don’t have enough aerodynamic downforce to fight for the win.”
Looking at the positives, the Spaniard admits that the ‘prancing horse’ has come on leaps-and-bounds this season and believes that the F10 excels with it’s tyre management.
“Our strong point seems to be tyre management as ours seemed to be in better condition than those of our rivals in the final stages of the race.”
The two-time world champion, and his team-mate, were testing Ferrari’s new F-Duct this weekend, which saw the pair using their left hand to close a vent in the cockpit, a method that has been criticised due to the fact the driver is being forced to drive with one hand.
However, Alonso has hinted that an update to the system will be introduced before Monaco making the system more “comfortable” to use.
“We practiced with this method [and] now it is automatic, [however] in the future we will find a more comfortable solution for the drivers.”
