What’s at stake for MotoGP at the Indonesian GP in Mandalika

As the championship battle tightens to a razor-thin margin, with Jorge Martin holding a mere two-point lead over Marc Marquez (333 to 331), the Indonesian GP promises to deliver another pivotal chapter in the MotoGP title race.

Ahead by the smallest margin between the top two in MotoGP history, Martin leads the standings as the paddock arrives at a circuit that has historically tested both championship frontrunners.

Although the Aprilia RS-GP proved competitive at Mandalika in 2025, “you never know what can happen in MotoGP,” Jorge Martin pointed out. After a Saturday crash at Motegi last season sidelined the #89 until the season finale, Martin has yet to race an RS-GP around the Indonesian venue.

Martin’s history at Mandalika is a mix of highs and lows. While he secured a commanding main race victory during his last visit in 2024, a costly mistake in 2023 saw him throw away a near-certain Sunday win after dominating the Sprint.

“It will be important as always to score good points,” Martin insisted. “Marco Bezzecchi was super strong last season. He was making a difference, but it is certain that the bike was working. But you never know, as every year is different.

“I don’t expect to beat everyone and win everything. It will be very difficult to fight with Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi.”

“I feel confident. Every time I take the bike, I feel faster and faster. […] I made a step forward with the bike and the team,” he nuanced.

Marquez targets breakthrough at unforgiving Mandalika circuit

On the other hand, the Indonesian circuit has been uncompromising for Marquez since joining the calendar in 2022. The Spaniard has never scored a single Sunday point in four visits to the venue, with his best result being a P3 in the 2024 Sprint. Mandalika was also the site of his high-profile collision with Bezzecchi in 2025, which initiated a challenging recovery period for his right arm.

“I arrive here in a completely different mood than last year, obviously. I am focused on the present,” Marquez insisted, drawing a contrast to the high of his Motegi title celebrations 12 months ago.

Marking his 300th Grand Prix start across all classes this weekend, Marquez must first finish a Sunday race in Mandalika if he hopes to overhaul Martin while keeping Bezzecchi at bay.

Boasting four double victories in the last six rounds, the #93 arrives with momentum. Victory this weekend would see Mandalika become the 23rd different venue where Marquez has taken a premier-class win, equalling Valentino Rossi’s total and bringing him just one shy of Mick Doohan’s all-time record (24).

“I will try to attack on every single circuit, as I said in Motegi,” Marquez declared. “Obviously, the circuit suits better Aprilia and its riders, and we will try to remain close to them.”

Meanwhile, his closest challenger, Marco Bezzecchi, trails the Ducati rider by 47 units. In 2025, however, the Italian experienced a rollercoaster of a weekend, surging to a late win in the Sprint race before retiring on Sunday after his collision with Marquez, despite showing excellent pace throughout the Indonesian weekend.

“I will try and be competitive, but every year is different,” he claimed.

With 222 points still up for grabs across the remaining rounds, the championship remains open between the lead trio, though 11 riders mathematically retain a shot at the crown.

Ducati leads Aprilia in tight Constructors’ battle

The battle for the constructors’ title is equally fierce. Ducati and Aprilia sit level on points, with Ducati officially leading by virtue of a higher win count. Despite holding the tiebreaker advantage, Ducati’s general manager Gigi Dall’Igna remains cautious.

“Every championship is different, and this is a more difficult one. We are very close to our competitor. For sure, we won some races in the last events, but the competition is very fast.”

“Jorge Martin is the type of rider to usually not make any big mistakes in the final rounds of the season. This is an advantage for him. But Marc Marquez is also used to fighting for the championship.”
