Honda has confirmed that Joan Mir will be sidelined for two further MotoGP rounds due to the illness that caused him to retire from the San Marino Grand Prix.
Mir missed last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix due to what was described as abnormalities found in his bloodwork after admitting to energy struggles throughout the Misano weekend.
According to Honda, Mir had since undergone tests at the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona, but is still yet to discover the root cause of his symptoms.
As a result, he has been strictly advised to rest and undergo treatments, which means he will miss both the Japanese and Indonesian grands prix.
“Joan Mir has been experiencing a variety of symptoms impacting his energy and performance for several months with a recent increase in severity, the cause is still unconfirmed at this time,” said MotoGP chief medical officer Dr Angel Charte.
“Due to their persistence and severity, Mir has been undergoing a series of tests at the Dexeus University Hospital with the aim of reaching a definitive diagnosis.
“Due to the symptoms, the medical advice is to observe strict rest and undergo various treatments for the next 15 days.
“Consequently, I have advised him against participating in the Japanese and Indonesian Grands Prix. His condition will continue to be closely monitored by my team.”
Honda is yet to announce a replacement for Mir for the two rounds, with Takaaki Nakagami the likely replacement following his appearance at the Austrian Grand Prix.
Nakagami scored three points with a 13th-placed finish at the Austrian Grand Prix while replacing Mir and had been pencilled in for a wildcard at Motegi, which may be shifted into a spell in the factory team for further rounds.
